CASE OF THE MONTH

Chloe ManningMeet "Chloe", a 5year old, female, spayed  tabby cat who presented to Greenville Veterinary Clinic with a primary complaint of bloody urine.  Chloe's appetite and activity were normal, but she was urinating inappropriately.  Physical examination was normal except for a thickened, painful bladder on abdominal palpation.  Chloe was treated with antibiotics, which temporarily improved her condition, but the bloody urine returned within two months . Chloe's StoneAt that time, a radiograph was taken of Chloe's abdomen.  The radiograph (x-ray) shown here visualizes the presence of a bladder stone within the bladder.

After being started again on antibiotics to treat the ongoing secondary infection, Chloe was hospitalized for a cystotomy.  This is surgical proceedure to enter into the bladder to remove the bladder stone.  The stone was sent to a laboratory for mineral analysis.  RadiographThe analysis showed the stone to be made primarily of Magnesium and Phosphates.  A mineral restricted prescription diet was prescribed to prevent future reoccurances of bladder stones.   She was discharged into her loving owner's care to continue her recovery, with a good prognosis for complete recovery.
